I’m a little late writing about the third episode of Stargate Universe. The reason is basically that I don’t have anything to say about it – neither good nor bad. I suppose that could be considered a bad thing (that I don’t have anything good to say).
I guess it did have yet another glaring instance of the characters just not thinking again. The premise of the episode is that the ship runs out of power, drops out of super-hyperspace, and heads toward a solar system.
Minor spoiler ahead…
So the ship uses a gas giant to alter its trajectory and act as a “brake” (to slow it down for entry into the solar system). The characters assume the ship is attempting to bring them to a habitable planet – the system contains three planets which may or may not be habitable.
The episode ends with Dr Rush noticing that their trajectory is now pointing directly at the star. He apparently assumes that this was accidental – that the ship screwed up.
Why would he assume that? Has the ship screwed up in other ways? For all he knows, the ship is deliberately heading for the star in order to (somehow magically) replenish its fuel or energy reserves.
It’s also annoying that Eli’s phone still has battery life left 😉
Other than that minor quibble, the episode was passable. We got some semi-decent character development, though there was nothing to get excited about.
My wife’s comment about SG-U so far was that while SG-1’s characters were too perfect, SG-U takes the opposite extreme: the characters are too flawed.
