A co-worker comes up to you and says “How’s it going?” by way of greeting.
How many of you pause almost awkwardly long, trying to decide whether to give the truthful answer (“sucky”) or the expected one (“fine”)?

it makes me happy to be reminded how similar we are, except my pause is more than “almost awkwardly long”.
Why would you pause? “How’s it going?”
Pretty standard responses, I don’t even think about it. “How’s it going” is more of a “hi” then an genuine interest in an answer. I use it all the time when I pass by people, I don’t expect more than a “hey”.
Well wordpress butchered that response.
Should have been “How’s it going?” lt;”Pretty good, you?” | “Not bad, you?” | “It’s going.”>
That’s the thing though… most of the time, these days, even “not bad” is a complete fabrication 😉
That said, I use “How’s it going” as a greeting, too, and I don’t expect a real answer. Guess it’s a bit inconsistent.
Yeah, I always have this problem too. This one manager of mine asked how I was doing for like three years and I would always respond by saying “mediocre.” I usually despise perfunctory greetings, which have no substance in them. And then, despite the lack of substance or sincerity in 95% of greetings, people get offended when I don’t greet them.
